E-Tickets now Available for Taj Mahal & Humayun’s Tomb

Visitors to the Taj Mahal will now be able to take advantage of a new e-ticketing service.

The scheme was launched recently as part of the new Indian government’s drive to modernise the country’s tourism industry. As well as the famous Agra mausoleum, e-ticketing services have also been introduced to Humayun’s Tomb in New Delhi.

Tickets for the Taj Mahal and Humayun’s Tomb can now also be booked 90 days in advance. Payment can be made via debit card, credit card or through net banking and there are three categories of tickets for visitors viz. foreign visitor, Saarc visitor and domestic visitor.

ASI officials said the e-tickets would be covered with security features including a bar code. ASI staffers are being trained and bar code scanners would be installed at the gates, ASI chief in Agra NK Pathak said.

Tourism personnel in Agra have welcomed the long pending initiative which hoteliers think will curb unauthorised entry, fake ticket selling and other dubious means to gain entry to the world heritage monument.

Reselling of tickets has been a issue for the past several years but interest groups in the form of black marketeers were thwarting attempts to introduce the e-ticketing facility. But now the union culture and tourism ministry has given the green signal to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (ICRTC) which in collaboration with the National Institute of Smart Governance, will operate and monitor the response.

Meanwhile, India has also launched a new 24×7 tourist helpline and special welcome cards for international tourists arriving at international airports.

The facility currently is available in two languages – Hindi and English across 6 lines. The department will be introducing international languages like German, Russian and French soon.
